Paris Saint-Germain defeat a warning to Manchester City - Yaya Toure

Manchester City could be in danger of suffering a Paris Saint-Germain-style humiliation if they try to defend their two-goal lead in Monaco, Yaya Toure has warned.

Pep Guardiola's side head to the Ligue 1 leaders for their Champions League round-of-16 clash on Wednesday leading 5-3 from the first leg at the Etihad.

A draw or one-goal defeat would be enough to see City through to the quarterfinals for a second successive year but Toure says they will travel to the Principality aiming to win on the night.

And he says Barcelona's incredible comeback against PSG -- winning the second leg 6-1 to overturn a 4-0 first leg defeat -- sent shock waves through the dressing room, coming on the same night as City's 0-0 draw with Stoke City in the Premier League.

"You saw Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, it was unbelievable. It was the sort of game you can't imagine. We can't go there relaxed," the Ivorian midfielder told reporters.

"In the dressing room, those kind of games are warnings, you know, because after the game against Stoke we went into the dressing room after and we saw Barca win 6-1 and you cannot imagine how the European Cup is so serious this year, and we can't underestimate Monaco.

"From my point of view and maybe the manager's too the best way to defend is to attack.

"When I watched PSG-Barcelona, PSG had fantastic players up front but they were trying to defend. I think that is the wrong thing to do.

"We are going to attack, we never do it the other way, we will attack and they will expect that as well."

Monaco are the highest scorers in the top five European leagues and pose a huge attacking threat with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Radamel Falcao and Bernardo Silva.

While City conceded three times in the first leg at the Etihad, the defence has tightened up markedly in the last couple of months -- keeping seven clean sheets from their last 10 games.

"It's very important because in Europe you're going to find such tough strikers, you know what I mean?" Toure added. "It's going to be tough because they have fantastic players, like Silva, Lemar...

"These two days I think the manager is going to try to help out defensively because, and you guys know, his way is to attack, not to defend, but when we attack we need to have that equilibrium to control those guys up front for Monaco."
