Remi Garde: Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny better than Thiago Silva

Former Arsenal player and Aston Villa manager Remi Garde believes the Gunners' Laurent Koscielny is a superior defender to Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva.

Asked to pick a combined XI of stars from the Arsenal and PSG squads by L'Equipe, the Frenchman opted for his compatriot Koscielny over the Brazilian.

"With Thiago Silva at 100 percent, it would have been a difficult decision," Garde said ahead of the teams' 1-1 Champions League draw in Paris on Tuesday.

"I like his [Koscielny's] pace, his restraint. With consistency and experience, he has become a leader, a teacher in the defence. He makes others better.

"Thiago Silva is a super defender but, since he started with PSG, the man nicknamed 'The Monster' has left me feeling hungry for more."

Elsewhere, Garde preferred Petr Cech to Alphonse Areola, Hector Bellerin to Serge Aurier, Nacho Monreal to Maxwell, Francis Coquelin to Adrien Rabiot, Santi Cazorla to Grzegorz Krychowiak, Theo Walcott to Blaise Matuidi and Olivier Giroud to Edinson Cavani.

The only PSG players to make the 50-year-old's combined XI were Marquinhos, Marco Verratti and Angel Di Maria.
