Premier League clubs will dominate Champions League again - Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker believes it is only a matter of time before English clubs dominate in Europe again.

Champions League success has been largely the preserve of Spanish sides in recent seasons, with Chelsea's 2012 win England's only triumph in eight years.

But with the money now swilling around the Premier League, former England, Tottenham and Leicester striker Lineker believes the superstars of the game will now be moving to these shores rather than Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"I think it goes in cycles, doesn't it?" said BT Sport presenter Lineker.

"In terms of success of countries in international football, obviously at the moment Spanish football is super dominant, and we've seen that not only in the Champions League but also in the Europa League as well.

"We've had our moments, as have Italian football and German football. I think we're just at the start of making more of an impact in Europe.

"I think we've been through a tough spell because, if you look at our sides, we haven't got the world-class superstars who still generally go to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"But now we're seeing the best coaches in the world come to our league and I think what will ensue is that the best players in the world will come to our league, because our league is where all the real money is. And it's only a matter of time.

"It might not be this generation, in terms of the Lionel Messis and Cristiano Ronaldos, it's a bit late for them. But I'm convinced the next superstars will come to our league and our big clubs will be the Barcelonas and Real Madrids of tomorrow.

"It might take a year, two years, three years, but I think it will happen."

Leicester, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City will be flying the flag for England this season and Lineker sees Pep Guardiola's side as the most likely to reach the latter stages.

"I think they are certainly more competitive than they have been in recent years," Lineker added. "Obviously they got to the semifinal last year, although they didn't play brilliantly to get there.

"But Guardiola -- the fact that he has managed to change the manner of the way they play so quickly shows what a master teacher he clearly is.

"I suspect City will be the club that would have the best chance of success this season, and they could conceivably go all the way.

"It's his first season and it's going to the difficult as he found at Bayern Munich. But I think they'll have a better chance than they've had in recent years."
