European clubs target 2024 UEFA deal to block Super League

GENEVA -- European clubs leader Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says talks are planned with UEFA that should block a breakaway Super League until 2024.

Two weeks after UEFA and the European Club Association agreed on Champions League entries and prize money models through 2021, Rummenigge says negotiations for the next three-year cycle will start within months.

Rummenigge, the ECA and Bayern Munich chairman, said at a news conference; "This is a kind of guarantee that the clubs stay united under the umbrella of UEFA."

A breakaway closed league for rich, storied clubs is threatened before each cycle of Champions League broadcast and sponsor contracts.

An ECA-UEFA working agreement also expires in 2021, opening the chance for a split.

Still, Rummenigge said: "We will cooperate in the future with UEFA, there is no doubt about that."
