Fenerbahce vs. Monaco UCL tie to go ahead - Sports Minister

Turkey's Sports Minister has said extra security measures will be in place for Fenerbahce's Champions League qualifier at home to Monaco on Wednesday and dismissed suggestions the game should be postponed.

Akif Cagatay Kilic told Reuters that the Ligue 1 club had been in contact over the current turmoil in Turkey, including an attempted coup and numerous terrorist attacks, ahead of the Champions League third qualifying round first leg in Istanbul.

"Monaco demanded some extra security measures," Kilic said. "We took these measures. We will make sure that their safety has the utmost guarantee."

Asked about the prospect of Monaco asking for the match to be postponed, he highlighted the fact that Euro 2016 had gone ahead despite problems with terrorism in France and added: "There is nothing negative going on in Turkey now. Everything has been taken under control swiftly."

Kilic also said fans from France will only be allowed to attend Wednesday's game if Turkish supporters are allowed to attend the return match in Monaco on Aug. 3.

Addressing players who have said they do not want to play in Turkey because of the current situation, such as Germany striker Mario Gomez and Argentine midfielder Jose Ernesto Sosa, he said: "Those who want to leave Turkey should not have made such statements.

"This upsets us. But it's their own decision. They are acting as if there is no terror risk in the countries they go to."

Fenerbahce later posted a message on their official website asking supporters to avoid acting against the "spirit of sport" on Wednesday as it will cause "a significant financial and spiritual damage for our club."

The message said UEFA had appointed a security delegate for the match and warned against political chants, entering the field, lighting flares, throwing objects or responding to provocation.

The message ended: "We kindly ask to our fans to show sensitivity of the issue and just support to our team."
