Kosovo clubs have to wait at least a year to make European debut

Kosovo's football clubs will have to wait at least a year to make their debut in European competitions after failing to comply with UEFA regulations in time to play next season.

Kosovo was accepted as the 55th nation by UEFA last month which ensures them a place in the first qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League for the domestic league and cup winners -- provided they meet UEFA's club licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations.

But UEFA says Kosovo champion FK Feronikeli and cup winner FC Prishtina "do not fully meet licensing criteria," and as such "they are consequently not entitled to enter UEFA club competitions in the 2016-17 season."

The decision follows an assessment by UEFA administration in conjunction with independent auditors.
