'Unbelievable' Atletico Madrid hailed by media, Bayern's setback Treble

Atletico Madrid are into their second Champions League final since 2014 after beating Bayern Munich on away goals. Here's how the media in Spain and Germany reacted.

SPAIN

AS' match report remembered Atletico legend Luis Aragones, who was denied a European Cup win by a last-minute Bayern Munich equaliser back in 1974:

"Dear Luis, I must write to you first, tell you what happened. Atletico are going to play their third Champions League final, the second in three years, and to do that have killed the Bayern ghost. That part of history is buried, Luis, revenged. Simeone took it on, for you, and for them. It was tough yesterday, there was suffering, a lot, but nobody knows it better than you -- if it was easy Atletico would not do it."

Marca: "You're unbelievable," said the double front cover, along with "Over to you" in hope that Real Madrid can make it another all-Spanish capital final this year.

Mundo Deportivo on Atletico overturning the status quo

"Oblak and Griezmann. Griezmann and Oblak. Two heroes, two players who were key to what happened. The signatories of an historic page for Atletico de Madrid. The two extremes of a TEAM. A great team who never stopped believing they could be the best in Europe despite budgets, superstars, and other factors. A group who know their limitations and play every ball as if it were their last. Atletico Madrid, even though it hurts many to hear it, are the team which questions the 'status quo.'"

GERMANY

Der Tagesspiegel: All that matters is success

"What an evening. Bayern Munich outplayed Atletico, rarely a Champions League semifinal was that one-sided. Bayern showed their best performances of the season, maybe even the best in the three years under Guardiola, and maybe they don't even know why they won 2-1 in the end and thus missed the final. Over two legs the purposefulness prevailed over the sublime. The ugly football was more successful than the beautiful, much to the aesthete's cost, and concerning football itself it wasn't all that wrong."

Kicker: The bitter hat trick

"Although it was a splendid and inspired performance by FC Bayern and for all the merit the stat remains that Bayern again were eliminated from the most prestigious of the three competitions. And for all the aura and sparkle star coach Guardiola imported to Munich, and despite having the deepest squad of the continent at his hands, he was not able to direct the most valuable trophy in European club football to Munich."

Spiegel Online: Bayern accomplish the setback Treble

"There was a lot of talk about whether Bayern bring enough attacking power to the pitch to break the probably best defence in Europe, and whether the departing coach Josep Guardiola again outsmarts himself or can prevail in the end. Those questions were not raised after the match. 35-7 shots at the goal, an electrified stadium until the very end made it clear that they had not just fallen to a Spanish team like in 2014 and 2014. But rather to a higher power which just doesn't grant it to Bayern."

Bild: Pep's most bitter defeat. "I gave my life for this team."

"It's sooo bitter, Bayern! And especially for Pep Guardiola, 45. The record champions fought a mega battle in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Atletico Madrid, they won 2-1. But the final in Milan on May 28 will go ahead without Bayern. Pep Guardiola fails to win the Champions League in three years at Bayern. He always falls to Spanish teams at the semifinal stage. But it was as close as this time. The scene when the Treble dream dies: Penalty for Bayern, they are 1-0 up. Thomas Muller misses."
