Bayern Munich need away goal for Champions League win - Philipp Lahm

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has targeted an away goal in his side's Champions League semifinal first leg at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.

The last two years have seen Bayern suffer UCL semifinal exits to La Liga opposition -- losing to eventual winners Real Madrid in 2013-14 and Barcelona 12 months back after losing both first legs away from home without scoring themselves.

Diego Simeone's Atletico have a superb defence record and have not conceded in their last four competitive games, but the former Germany international told the pregame news conference at the Estadio Vicente Calderon that his team knew they really needed to score in the first leg.

"We remember what happened in our last semifinals," Lahm said. "We have not forgotten that we did not score any goal away from home against either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"We know that tomorrow we must score. We must keep fighting -- have the memories of the 2010 and 2012 finals when we lost, but in 2013 we won. These memories unite players."

Lahm denied a feeling put forward by Atletico's players and pundits this week that Bayern are the favourites for the tie given their greater budget and longer tradition in the competition.

"There are no favourites in these games," he said. "We are in the semifinals, they got here by beating Barcelona. It is 50-50, depends who is in the better form on the day. And which individual players can make the difference. I believe the game will be decided in the second leg."

The versatile full-back/midfielder said he was not worried about either Atletico's reputation for physicality or referee Mark Clattenburg being influenced by atmosphere at Calderon.

"We know the most important is to focus on ourselves, and not think about what will happen with the referee," Lahm said. "There will also been a second leg, we know that, and we are ready."

Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso also spoke to the press and said he and his teammates had a lot of respect for Simeone's side.

"We know Atletico very well," Alonso said. "In last days we have been preparing for the fame. We are all very focused. We know it will be tie over 180 minutes very intense, against a great team, showing they are in the top five in Europe in recent years.

"They deserve to be where they are, we have maximum respect for them. There are areas of the game in which they are the best team in the world.

"We have no doubt that tomorrow will be a very intense game, tightly contested, with their fans behind them. We hope to get a good result to take home for the second leg."
