Wolfsburg can cause UCL 'sensation' at Real Madrid - defender Naldo

Wolfsburg defender Naldo has said his side will not go to Real Madrid in the Champions League looking only to protect their 2-0 lead from the first leg.

Goals by Ricardo Rodriguez and Maximilian Arnold gave the Bundesliga club a great chance of progressing against 10-time winners Madrid and left Cristiano Ronaldo to reflect that his team would need "a perfect night" to turn the tie around.

Naldo, 33, was a key players for Wolfsburg as they kept Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema quiet.

He told kicker: "We need to play the counter, just like in the first leg. We should not start dreaming, but positive thinking is OK.

"We were strong, allowed Real nearly no space, played quick counter-attacks. When we play like that it's hard to beat us.

"We can cause a sensation at Madrid. We have nothing to lose. We can't park the bus for 90 minutes. We have to seek out chances, just like in the first leg.

"Real have shown they are not that compact in defence, and we have shown that we can beat one of the big clubs."

Naldo said he believed Zinedine Zidane's Madrid might have "underestimated us" and added: "You could feel their discontent. Marcelo, Bale, Ronaldo. He was really quiet. To them, it was unfamiliar they didn't get that many chances."

Naldo's sentiment was echoed by attacker Bas Dost, who said Wolfsburg "have to believe that we can do it" and added: "We have already shown that we won't show them too much respect."

But for all the spectacular football Wolfsburg have played in the Champions League, things have not run so smoothly in the Bundesliga.

With five matches left to be played, they are eighth in the table, six points behind seventh-placed Schalke.

After a 1-1 home draw with Mainz at the weekend, they will either have to win the Champions League or claw back the six points and finish seventh if they want to return to Europe next season.

CEO Klaus Allofs told Wolfsburger Nachrichten: "We need to keep up the pressure on those ahead of us. I don't want to be accused at the end of the season of letting go of it despite still having chances. We will not switch into holiday mode."
