Bayer Leverkusen missing four players for BATE Borisov clash

Manager Roger Schmidt has Bayer Leverkusen firing on all cylinders.
Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt is without four players.

Bayer Leverkusen will be without a quartet of players when they take on BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Leverkusen have this season been one of the highest scoring teams in the competition, yet their 11 goals have only been enough to secure four points from four group games.

Going into the final two games of Group E, the Bundesliga club trail leaders Barcelona by six points and Roma by one, so they will be hoping for victory at bottom-placed BATE.

Leverkusen secured three crucial points in the Bundesliga on Saturday when they beat Frankfurt 3-1 away from home, ending a drought of three consecutive defeats in all competitions in the process.

"The victory at Frankfurt did us a world of good," sporting executive Rudi Voller told kicker. "In Borisov it will be as difficult, if not even more difficult, than in Frankfurt."

However, on Tuesday Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt will be without centre-backs Omer Toprak and Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who are both suspended.

Lars Bender, who has been sidelined since October, did not travel to Belarus for the Champions League tie due to ongoing ankle problems.

Stefan Kiessling, meanwhile, also missed out on the trip with illness.

"That's bitter," Schmidt told kicker at the airport on Monday of Kiessling's absence.
