Man United, City both lose in UCL; Cristiano Ronaldo scores hat trick

Manchester City and Manchester United both let leads slip and lost their openers of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

Man United's return to Europe after a year away ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to PSV Eindhoven in Group B, with Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh scoring after Memphis Depay's opener.

Depay, a former PSV player, gave United the lead in the 41st minute by dribbling between two defenders and shooting through the goalkeeper's legs.

The result was made all the worse for United by a broken leg to defender Luke Shaw, who was stretchered off in the first half.

Moreno equalised in the lengthy period of first-half stoppage time -- caused by his challenge on Shaw -- with a header that deflected in off Daley Blind. Luciano Narsingh's 57th-minute goal secured PSV's victory.

Man City fell to a 2-1 loss at home to last year's runners-up Juventus in Group D.

The Premier League side controversially took the lead in the 58th minute when Vincent Kompany climbed the back of Giorgio Chiellini, and the ball went in off the defender's face.

The Italians began the fightback in the 70th minute when Mario Mandzukic glanced home a whipped cross from Paul Pogba.

Morata curled in the winner from outside the penalty area after a long ball forward was deflected into his path.

Cristiano Ronaldo recorded another hat trick as Real Madrid cruised past Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 in Group A.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 30th minute and the game opened up after Taras Stepanenko was sent off for a second yellow card for a sliding tackle on Sergio Ramos shortly after the break.

Ronaldo got on the scoresheet with a penalty 10 minutes after half-time and added another eight minutes later before completing his hat trick with a header in the 81st minute.

The goals give him 80 in the Champions League, overtaking Barcelona's Lionel Messi who plays on Wednesday.

But the game was not all good news for Real, who saw Gareth Bale, Ramos and Raphael Varane all leave the game because of injuries.

Also in Group A, Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 against Zlatan Ibrahimovic's boyhood club Malmo.

Angel Di Maria scored his first goal for PSG just four minutes in, and Edinson Cavani headed home Ibrahimovic's pass just after the hour mark to double the advantage.

Di Maria, starting just his second game since joining from Manchester United, cut inside from the right and steered the ball imperiously into the left corner.

Returning to the lineup after shaking off an abdominal injury, Ibrahimovic looked short on fitness and lacked his usual assurance, but he emphatically turned provider in the 61st minute, running onto a left-wing cross from Maxwell and acrobatically back-heeling the ball up to Cavani, who nodded down past goalkeeper Johan Wiland despite being off balance.

Sevilla were awarded three penalties in a 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the other game in Group D.

Kevin Gameiro scored his first just after half-time, and though he missed a second opportunity from the spot soon after, Ever Banega made no mistake in making it 2-0.

Yevheniy Konoplyanka added a third six minutes from time for last year's Europa League winners.

An early brace from Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win away to Galatasaray in Group C.

The France forward silenced the crowd at the Turk Telecom Arena when he put the Spaniards ahead in the 18th minute, and he doubled their lead seven minutes later.

The hosts had three shots on goal throughout their Group C opening encounter and could not beat Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak on the night.

Also in Group C, Nicolas Gaitan and Kostas Mitroglou scored in the second half to give Benfica a 2-0 win over newcomers FC Astana.

Gaitan got the breakthrough in the 51st minute, breaking into the area from the left flank and firing a low drive into the far corner.

Mitroglou extended the Portuguese club's lead 11 minutes later when he tapped in Eliseu's cross from the left. The goals came after a frustrating first half in which Benfica dominated the run of play but lacked the speed and imagination to pierce Astana's packed defense.

Astana, the first team from Kazakhstan to reach the competition's group phase, produced a competent performance and looked poised to upset Benfica when substitute Aleksei Schetkin hit the post in the 46th minute.

In Man United's Group B, Julian Draxler's first goal for Wolfsburg was enough for the Bundesliga runners-up to begin with a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

Draxler, brought in from league rivals Schalke to replace the departed Kevin de Bruyne, broke the deadlock in the Group B game five minutes before the break. The Germany midfielder stabbed home the rebound from close range after Igor Akinfeev saved his initial headed effort from Ricardo Rodriguez' cross.

Wolfsburg dominated the match but failed to take a number of chances to put the result beyond doubt.
