Club Brugge need 'great miracle' to oust Man Utd - Michel Preud'homme

Club Brugge need a "great miracle" to overcome Manchester United on Wednesday and advance to the Champions League group stage, says coach Michel Preud'homme.

The Belgian club must erase a 3-1 deficit in the second leg of the playoff round tie after last week's defeat at Old Trafford.

A Michael Carrick own goal had given Preud'homme's a shock early lead, but the joy was short-lived as Memphis Depay scored a brace, and a stoppage-time goal from Marouane Fellaini made United's lead comfortable.

And Preud'homme acknowledged the difficulty his side faces if they are to reach the group stage.

"It would be a great miracle," the former Belgium goalkeeper said. "They are two goals in front, they have a very professional team, can make a decision by an action at each moment and we have some problems with the number of players that were already out in the first leg, plus Timmy Simons and Brandon Mechele.

"To have a small chance we need to be better in our last pass and if we have a chance, it has to be a goal. Sometimes you have a small opening and if you don't make the action very quickly, they are all back.

"If we want to have a chance, we have to be perfect."

Mechele will be suspended on Wednesday after picking up two yellow cards in the first leg, and captain Simons injured his thigh at Old Trafford.

Striker Tom De Sutter, who will move to Turkish side Bursaspor after the game, will be fit, but Brugge will still be without Stefano Denswil, Bjorn Engels, Lior Refaelov, Felipe Gedoz, Bernie Ibini and Jose Izquierdo.

De Sutter said he was aiming for a spectacular send-off.

"You always have to believe," he said. "Everything is possible in football, so why not now? If you don't believe, you'd better not play the game."
