Carles Puyol warns Barcelona of Juventus quality ahead of UCL final

Barcelona must be wary of Juventus' team spirit if they want to win the Champions League final, Blaugrana legend Carles Puyol has told L'Equipe.

Barcelona start Saturday's showpiece at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin as favourites, but Puyol, 37, warned his former teammates they will take the Serie A champions lightly at their peril.

"They're a real team with great players that work a lot. They have a very good goalkeeper, a very solid defence, a midfield that has everything, and -- up front -- players who make the difference, Morata and Tevez," said Puyol, who ended his playing career last summer after 15 years in the Barca first team.

"I think Barca are favourites, but things even out in a final and all the small details count. The team gives off a lot of confidence, but you have to respect Juve."

The former Spain international defender added that he visited the Turin club last season, saying: "I went to Milan, Inter and Juve, and I was amazed by the way in which Juventus work.

"They opened the doors of the club to us and even the dressing room. It's a fantastic organisation with a magnificent stadium. Their current success is anything but an accident."

Juve's chances of a third European title, and their first since 1996, hinge on stifling Barca's formidable attacking trident of Luis Suarez, Neymar and the irrepressible Lionel Messi, who between them scored 81 of the La Liga title-winners' 110 league goals last season.

Puyol, however, insists there is much more to Luis Enrique's side than their vaunted trio of forwards.

"You're talking about the three of the world's best players. But there is not only them. When you look at the whole team, the solidity in defence... the coach deserves credit for that too. There has been an evolution in Barca's play. At the start of the season, there were times when the team was very stretched, and that's something they have improved," said Puyol, who paid homage to Messi, 27, the main inspiration behind Barca's La Liga and Copa del Rey final successes.

"For me, he's the best player in history. What I have seen in him, I have never seen in anyone else. It's difficult to have an opinion on past players who I have never seen play or only on video. But Leo has been the best for so many years, with extraordinary consistency. Moreover, he continues improving.

"Yes, before he also did extraordinary things, but now he's complete. There are three defenders who come towards him? Fine. He can go past all three, like we saw him do in the Copa del Rey final. Otherwise, he lifts his head and passes you the ball... Even I would score goals with his passes. He's incredible."
