Diego Simeone: European failure a 'wake-up call' for English football

Premier League clubs' failure in European competition this season despite their financial power should be a "wake-up call" for English football, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has warned.

England started the season with four challengers in the Champions League and three in the Europa League however no team has managed to make it into the last eight of either competition.

The Premier League's financial strength -- in large part due to its huge broadcasting contracts -- means it can attract players from top teams in other leagues, most noticeable last summer when Chelsea were able to attract Diego Costa and Filipe Luis from La Liga champions Atletico for around £50 million.

However the Champions League campaigns of Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool were all very disappointing, with Tottenham, Everton and Hull City all falling early in the Europa League too.

And Simeone insists that England's clubs must look at why they have not been able to translate their economic power into success on the pitch.

"There is no English team left in the Champions League, and that has surprised me," Simeone wrote in his column for Goal.com. "English football has a huge strength in players and finances. To not have a team among the best in the Champions League, nor even in the Europa League, is a wake-up call for them.

"They must ask why, with teams like Chelsea and others having so much economic and footballing power, today they have no team in the Champions League."

The Argentine coach also thinks that, despite England having been able to take very good players from other leagues around Europe, Real Madrid and Barcelona remain the two best teams around.

"There are great players, a great economic strength which allows for the arrival of many very good players at a lot of [English] teams," Simeone wrote. "But the Spanish league continues to have the very best teams in the world, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"Then, from there, us at Atletico Madrid compete with two teams who are obliged to win the Champions League -- at a minimum Madrid and Barcelona find themselves among the eight or four best teams. In the Spanish league, the accomplishment of Atletico Madrid to win it last season was tremendous."
