Stevan Jovetic and Adem Ljajic to play key roles, says Delio Rossi

Stevan Jovetic and Adem Ljajic are the players who can make the difference when Manchester City travel to Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday night, according to former Fiorentina coach Delio Rossi.

Roma host City knowing that three points would assure of their place in the round of 16, while a draw could also be enough for the Serie A side.

Delio worked with both City's Jovetic and Roma's Ljajic during his time in charge at Fiorentina and is backing both forwards to play key roles at the Stadio Olimpico.

"Despite being knocked back by serious injuries, Stevan has proven himself to be an absolute star in one of the biggest clubs in the world," Rossi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"When he joined Manchester City, he risked being crushed by the competition of players like [Sergio] Aguero, David Silva and [Edin] Dzeko, yet 'Jo-Jo' has got wide shoulders and he's still getting better and better.

"When I see him play, he reminds me of [Alessandro] Del Piero. At the same time, Stevan has intelligence and class like the young [Francesco] Totti.

"He and Ljajic both have extraordinary touches and they can decide a game at any moment with one of their touches of class."

Rossi's altercation with Ljajic in May 2012, when the Serbian applauded his coach ironically after being substituted and received a punch from an enraged Rossi, has not affected the 54-year-old former Lazio coach's admiration for a player he believes "does not even realise himself how devastating he could become."

"I am sorry for attacking him and I apologised to everybody, including him, for it and I paid the price," said Rossi. "I would still try to explain to him again that it is the team which counts over the individual, but let's end that here and talk about the game at the Olimpico.

"Ljajic is taking an important step in his career now and he is unleashing that extraordinary talent which is allowing him now to be the man who is leading this Roma side. I see more self-belief in him; he's more aware of the gift he's got while [Roma coach Rudi] Garcia has given him more security and courage."

Those are two attributes Roma will need on Wednesday night, when Rossi hopes and believes they will have the edge.

"Garcia's got a great side who can play on a par with anybody," Rossi said. "They also have the Olimpico behind them and that's a huge advantage. I want to be a delighted Italian fan."
