Basel coach Paulo Sousa relishing crunch Liverpool clash in UCL

Basel coach Paulo Sousa is optimistic of his side's chances ahead of their make-or-break Champions League meeting with Liverpool on Tuesday.

Despite taking six points from their home games against Liverpool and Ludogorets, Basel have not yet secured qualification for the Champions League round of last 16.

Their 1-0 defeat away to Ludogorets in late October leaves the Swiss champions needing one more point from the trip to Anfield.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of the match, Paulo Sousa recalled the club's past successes against the Premier League side and said the game against Liverpool is an opportunity "to write another outstanding chapter into FCB's history."

"The match is a great challenge for me and the team, and I like to be challenged. Because this is a difficult task and we can grow with it," he said.

But attacker Marco Streller said that despite the situation in Group B his side are not favourites going into the clash.

"We should not get carried away," he said on the club's official homepage. "We might have played more Champions League football than Liverpool in recent years. But they play in a league where it's more difficult to qualify. But when FCB takes on Liverpool, the English club will always be favourites."

"We will fight till we drop and if that's not enough then it is also OK," he added.

In contrast to Liverpool, Basel have so far enjoyed an encouraging domestic campaign and - after winning 19 out of a possible 21 points from their last seven games -- have put an eight-point gap between them and Zurich at the top of the Super League.

"I hope that after the match you can still say that they [Liverpool] don't have a run," Fabian Frei added in Neue Zurcher Zeitung. "We have all options. We can access our performance 100 percent it'll be very tough for them to beat us."

Meanwhile, newspaper 20 minutes reported that "in Basel there is hardly anyone who doubts that they will advance."

"Streller will score the goal from a counter," the Basel district president Guy Morin said. "That would be very nice for the city."
