Man City have to show 'personality' to advance, says Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany is adamant Manchester City can still qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League but believes the struggling side have to show the "personality" to turn around their European form.

The Premier League champions prop up Group E with two points from four games and are yet to win in continental competition in 2014.

But captain Kompany feels that they can defeat Bayern Munich and Roma to progress -- even if he admits he may the lone optimist.

He said: "Everyone will jump on the bandwagon, but I am going to go the other way and say I still believe in my team, and still back everyone at this club 100 percent to turn it around.

"But we will have to show personality in the next games, otherwise we will have to wait another year, and no one at this club wants that.

"There are two games left in the Champions League, and a good City should win those games -- we just have to get back to that level.

"I am the captain and if no one believes any more, I am the one who believes we might just have a chance."

While City have been criticised for their form in the Champions League, where they have only reached the last 16 once, the Belgian defender feels that too much is expected of a club that is a relative newcomer to the competition.

This is only City's fourth Champions League campaign and Kompany added: "Let's put things into perspective -- we are not club that has been there for 20-odd years, and doing it.

"We are trying to put down milestones every year and so far we have been quite successful at that.

"You don't just go from never playing in the Champions League to winning it. There is a process."

Kompany picked up a knock in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to CSKA Moscow and City are assessing if he will be fit to face QPR on Saturday.
