Zlatan Ibrahimovic ruled out of PSG-Barcelona tie with heel injury

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss a Champions League reunion with former club Barcelona on Tuesday after Paris Saint-Germain confirmed that the striker has not recovered from an injury to his left heel.

Ibrahimovic, 32, was absent from both PSG's 2-0 victory over Caen last Wednesday and a 1-1 draw at Toulouse on Sunday as the French champions drew their fifth game of the season.

Despite missing out this weekend in a bid to be fit to face the club he signed for in 2009, the Sweden international has been ruled out after the club revealed that his performance in medical tests on Monday morning "had not been satisfactory."

PSG coach Laurent Blanc conceded in his prematch news conference that Ibrahimovic's absence is a huge loss, but he is confident his squad still possesses enough quality to secure a result against Barca.

"We tried this morning. He was having some treatment and it was impossible he could be fit for Tuesday," he said. "To be fair, I had started preparing the game with the big possibility that he was not there. The pain was still very much there.

"Of course, we are better with him and it will be tougher for us without him. We experienced it too last season. We will have to do without him. We have great strikers to replace him and we will have to compensate the loss with a great collective performance."

Blanc does not know exactly how long Ibrahimovic will be out for, but is hopeful that the striker will be fit in time for Sunday's Ligue 1 clash against Monaco.

"We will continue to assess him on a daily basis," he said. "The medical staff are doing everything they can to get him fit as quickly as possible. We will see the evolution of the injury. If we can have him back for Sunday, we would be very happy because he is such an important player for the team."

PSG full-back Maxwell was also in attendance at the prematch news conference, and he too was sad to hear the news of Ibrahimovic's injury.

"Not only was [Ibrahimovic] disappointed because we are playing Barcelona, our former team, but he also felt bad because it is an important moment for us this season," Maxwell said. "We needed him but he is not ready. We will have to do without him and make sure that we are still in the competition when he comes back."

Ibrahimovic is the latest of Blanc's influential players set to miss the clash against Barca at the Parc des Princes: Ezequiel Lavezzi has been ruled out for up to six weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury during PSG's win at Caen, while Thiago Silva -- who is also struggling with a hamstring strain he picked up in a friendly in August -- is likely to return to action after the international break.
