Atletico fell behind early but managed to break the Blues' defensive tactics to equalise before halftime.

"Tonight was the result of a big collective effort. We generated that possibility of us reaching a beautiful final," Simeone said.

"It was a smashing game in the first half, tactically speaking, until the first goal opened it up. They had the first chance but we managed to equalise relatively soon afterwards."

The away goal meant Chelsea had to press forward again, but a Diego Costa penalty in the second half gave Atletico their first leg before Arda Turan put away the tie in the 72nd minute.

Now los rojiblancos face city rivals Real Madrid on May 24 at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal.

"We did everything within our power to get through to the final and we deserve to be there, as do Real Madrid," Simeone said after the match.

"Fernando Torres got the opener but we knew that one of our goals would count for double and so we had to fight to score it.

"We had to work so hard in order to find ourselves playing the type of game that suited us, which came from the second goal onwards.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was full of praise for his opponents, and Simeone agreed that his side were in control for most of the match.

"We completely controlled the game against a great side," Simeone said.
