Dortmund pleased to avoid City in draw

Borussia Dortmund were relieved to avoid Manchester City in last 16 of the Champions League as they take on Zenit St. Petersburg, a side they have never met before.

A late Kevin Grosskreutz goal against Olympique Marseille secured Dortmund’s passage to the last 16 and moved them top of Group F, dubbed the Group of Death, which allowed them an easier draw, albeit one that includes a trip to Russia.

“We have never been there. That’s an interesting draw,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told the official website. “It should be a little advantage for us that we play the away leg first. But we don’t know what the climate will be like there in late February. But to be honest, I am delighted we were not drawn against Manchester City.”

Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke, who attended the draw in Nyon, was also satisfied with the draw, saying: “Once you are in the last 16 you can’t expect an easy draw. But looking at the other German teams, we can live with it. Petersburg is a good team and the climate will be difficult as well. We take it very seriously.

“It might be an advantage for us that they play no games in the domestic league until March. But it is an ambitious task. They have very good players, not only Hulk. They are on top of the Russian League again.”
