Lennon hails 'heroic' Celtic

Celtic boss Neil Lennon admitted his resources are being stretched to breaking point after his side secured a famous Champions League win against Dutch giants Ajax.

With Lennon struggling to get a fully fit side into battle amid a hectic programme of domestic and European games, their 2-1 win on Tuesday night was hailed as a huge success by the Celtic manager.

"This was out 19th competitive game of the season so far and we are stretched with the squad we have so this was an heroic victory," stated Lennon.

"I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the game and it leaves us in a very good position going into the next game against Ajax in Amsterdam. From what I saw tonight, a good result over there is not beyond us.

"This was a massive win in the context of the group. We have three points, just two points behind Milan so the group is open for us again."

Ajax boss Frank de Boer struggled to find positive words to sum up the Celtic display, suggesting his side will be eager to snare some revenge when Lennon's men go to Amsterdam in the next round.

"Celtic didn't create anything although they scored twice, once with a penalty," argued the former Rangers star.

"We dominated the game, but only scored once and should have equalised before they got their second. It is going to be very hard for us to get second place but I have confidence in the third place and finishing ahead of Celtic.

"We have one point and if we win at home we will be one point ahead of Celtic. It will be difficult but if we play that way again, eight times out of 10 the best team wins and I thought we were the best team."

Meanwhile, Lennon said he had 'no complaints' about the red card handed out to his midfielder Nir Biton, as he accepted the challenge that earned the Israeli an early bath was late.
