Jerome Boateng: City one of the best

Jerome Boateng has warned his Bayern Munich team-mates that Manchester City are one of the best teams in Europe ahead of this week’s Champions League meeting, but he remains confident of victory.

Fernandinho eyes Bayern prize

Boateng played for City during the 2010-11 season, but returned to the Bundesliga with Bayern after a frustrating campaign in England.

Boateng helped his current side to the Treble last season, and the Germany international has been one of the key factors for Bayern’s fantastic defensive record during the opening games of the season, joining team-mate Philipp Lahm at the top of the prestigious kicker ranking for the best-rated defender in the Bundesliga.

The European champions -- who faced City in the group stage of the 2011-12 Champions League before going on to reach the final -- are favourites to top Group D ahead of City, but Boateng knows Manuel Pellegrini’s men are a threat.

“Looking at the squad, they certainly are one of the best teams in Europe,” he told “We need and want those games -- and we also want to take all three points home from Manchester, because we have the quality to do so.”

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, meanwhile, has said his side’s sound financial model is better than that of many continental rivals, including City.

Bayern have not only dominated opponents on the pitch in the last season but also outshone them on the balance sheet, with the Bundesliga club a rarity among Europe's biggest sides in that they are debt-free.

As his team prepares to face the Sheikh-funded City on Wednesday, Rummenigge, 58, told RMC that Bayern's financial management was the way forward, particularly with UEFA instigating Financial Fair Play.

“In terms of finances, Germany and Bayern in particular is based on Financial Fair Play,” he said. “The financial system of Bayern is better because it's independent. We finance ourselves, and don't need an oligarch. I'm not criticising Manchester City by saying that. They're a really great team. They've shown that recently. On the pitch, I don't have any criticism to make.”
