Jurgen Klopp given 1-match ban

UEFA has confirmed Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp will be suspended for his side's meeting with Marseille on October 1.

Jurgen Klopp argues with a UEFA official before being sent off at Napoli.
Klopp reacted furiously in Naples.

Klopp was sent to the stands after confronting the fourth official during his team's 2-1 loss against Napoli in their opening Group F match.

Following his dismissal in Naples, Klopp issued an apology in his post-match press conference. "I have to take the blame, that was just dumb," he said.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said at the time: "I don’t believe this will have any big consequences. He did not insult anyone. He admitted that he overreacted and that is was not okay. For us, that issue is settled and checked."

But UEFA announced on Tuesday that Klopp will be banned for the home game against Marseille, and he could face a further penalty following a UEFA disciplinary hearing on October 2.

A UEFA spokeswoman said: "A decision about a possible extension of the ban will be made by the control and disciplinary chamber on October 2."

In the German press, the Dortmund boss was heavily criticised for his first-half touchline outburst. One German paper, Die Tageszeitung, suggested that Klopp "has become a problem, even more so because people look up to him". Die Tageszeitung had urged its readers to "please stop liking this man".

Although it was Klopp’s first outburst on the European stage, the Dortmund coach has landed a total of €48,000 fines from the German Football Association.
