Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar tore Roma to shreds as Barcelona heralded their Champions League glory march with a 6-1 thumping at the Camp Nou.

Messi's return after two months of injury restored Europe's most devastating attacking trio, with the Argentina forward scoring twice.

Suarez grabbed a brace of his own, with Gerard Pique and Adriano also on target as Barcelona secured top spot in Group E and a place in the last 16.

Though Neymar missed a late penalty, the Brazil striker had a hand in the two opening goals and looked threatening throughout.

Edin Dzeko had a penalty saved too, and that after heading wide from 10 yards with the game goalless, as Roma endured a night to forget.

The on-loan Manchester City striker grabbed the final word with a goal in stoppage time, but by then the visitors had long since been swept aside.

Barcelona hogged 73 per cent of the first-half possession and fired three goals, but were hardly hassled once Dzeko missed an early sitter.

The Bosnia striker found himself unmarked 10 yards out, but headed over with the clash goalless.

Just two minutes later Barcelona struck, Suarez converting without issue after Neymar's angled ball allowed Dani Alves to slide into the Uruguay forward's path.

Lionel Messi scored a brace in his first start since September.
Lionel Messi shone in his return to the Barcelona lineup.

Every outfield player took a touch as Barcelona doubled their advantage, Neymar and Messi twice exchanging passes before Suarez sent Messi through on goal.

The Argentina striker then dinked the ball over Wojciech Szczesny as Barcelona claimed their second goal in four minutes.

The hosts then ensured the half would not close with a whimper, Suarez volleying home from a clearing header for his second of the night.

The hosts refused to relent after the break, Messi sliding across for Pique to tap home his 10th Champions League goal.

Messi then doubled his tally on the night, redirecting Suarez's shot past Szczesny for Barcelona's fifth goal.

Neymar fired his penalty too close to Szcesny next, allowing the former Arsenal keeper to palm the effort away.

But just as the Roma stopped geared up to toast his reflexes, Adriano popped up and tapped home the rebound.

The hectic night took a bizarre turn when Dzeko failed to convert a penalty of his own, compounding a miserable evening given his glaring first-half miss.

Dzeko finally found the net in the final meaningful act of the clash, but the 29-year-old will be forgiven for lamenting previous errors rather than toasting the consolation.
