Manchester United came from behind to beat Belgian side Club Brugge 3-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

United slipped to a shock goal in the eighth minute as a Victor Vazquez free kick was deflected past goalkeeper Sergio Romero by Michael Carrick.

But Louis van Gaal's men were not behind for long as Carrick made amends with a fine pass that saw Memphis Depay net his first goal for the club. The Dutch winger plucked the ball out of the air, then lobbed the ball over his marker and raced into the box to score with a low shot.

Man United fans shouted for a penalty when Adnan Januzaj was sent through and was knocked off the ball in the box by Oscar Duarte, but the referee gave a foul the other way instead.

Brugge continued their attacking efforts, not overawed by the occasion, and Tuur Dierckx hammered a ball across the box just out of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo's reach.

But Depay put United ahead before the half-time break as he cut inside to curl a wonderful shot into the far corner and bag his second goal of the game.

Just after the hour mark, the Dutchman should have got his hat trick. Luke Shaw's cross was expertly flicked into his path by Wayne Rooney but from the penalty spot with the goal gaping, Depay hit his shot over the bar.

He then had an ambitious 35-yard strike from a free kick which zipped past the post.

Brugge were forced to play the last 10 minutes down to 10 men as Brandon Mechele picked up two yellow cards in quick succession -- the second for a foul on Javier Hernandez -- and was sent off.

Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling wasted good chances late on, but with the last act of the game, Depay's cross found Fellaini who headed a vital goal for United which gives them a 3-1 lead to take into their second leg next week.
