Tottenham's Juan Foyth: Not playing last season helped me grow

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has said is benefiting from playing so little last season after a stellar month for club and country.

The 20-year-old centre-back only made eight appearances in his first season with Spurs, following his move from Estudiantes last summer, with all of those coming in cup competitions.

But he has now started the last three Premier League matches. In that period, Foyth scored a winning goal against Crystal Palace and was named the man of the match on his Argentina debut.

"I'm very happy because the things that I was hoping for have arrived," Foyth said after Saturday's 3-1 victory over Chelsea. "Now I can't slow down for those good things keep coming.

"Last year I played in the cups. I took it very seriously because they were good tournaments and against good rivals, even though some were from lower divisions. They were good rivals and were games where we had to fight a lot.

"I took those games to earn experience in a type of football that I had never played before, and I also used the training sessions with my teammates to adapt as quickly as possible.

"The first year was positive despite playing little because I improved a lot of things. Thank God now I can play a little more.

"I am well, happy to be part of [the team] little by little. Maybe I made some mistakes that I have to correct but that's something that will always happen.

"I think the team played very well [against Chelsea]. We started by pressing very high. We are very happy because the victory leaves us with a great spirit."

Foyth has benefited from the absences of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the last month. But Vertonghen has now recovered from his hamstring injury and, while Mauricio Pochettino chose not to risk him against Chelsea, the Belgian could now relegate Foyth to the bench.

"I can't play against Inter Milan [on Wednesday] because I'm not in the Champions League list and then, against Arsenal, the manager will decide who to play," Foyth said. "Whatever [he decides] I'll always support the team and try to give my best if I play.

"I am grateful to Pochettino for the opportunity to be playing these games. Thank God we could win these last three.

"We're good teammates [among the centre-backs]. We give advice among us and try to learn from each other. They're great people before players and I'm also happy with that."
