Tottenham Hotspur and Dundee legend Alan Gilzean dies aged 79

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Dundee striker Alan Gilzean has died at the age of 79 following a short illness.

Gilzean, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour, became known as "The King of White Hart Lane" after joining Spurs in 1964.

The Scotland international, capped 22 times by his country, scored 133 goals for the Londoners after a seven-year spell at Dundee, helping them win two League Cups, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup.

"Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our legendary former striker Alan Gilzean," a Spurs statement said.

Dundee said they were devastated to learn of Gilzean's death, adding: "The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Alan's family and friends at this difficult time."

Former Spurs teammate Jimmy Greaves, writing on Twitter, said Gilzean was "a lovely man and obviously one of the all-time Spurs greats.
