Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen calm about Toby Alderweireld's future at the club

Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen says he is relaxed about the future of club teammate and fellow Belgium international Toby Alderweireld.

The defensive duo also played together at Ajax, but there have been rumours that Alderweireld could leave at the end of the season as the 29-year-old is yet to pen a new deal.

"Whenever we play we understand each other," Vertonghen told Sky Sports News. "When I left for Tottenham, Toby left for Atletico [Madrid] and Southampton but we found each other quite quick after that, so no stress.

"We've been playing together for a long time and we know how to play together, but I don't want to speak about this because it might sound disrespectful to whoever is playing next to me or next to Toby in other situations."

Alderweireld is under contract until 2020, but there is also a £25 million release clause that will be activated in the summer of 2019 if does not agree to new terms.

The centre-back has been on the road to recovery in recent weeks -- and looked set to return to the side in January -- but having only featured twice for Tottenham since November after suffering a hamstring injury, he missed both Champions League encounters with Juventus.
