NEWPORT, Wales -- Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has said Saturday's FA Cup draw at Newport County was "a reminder of how far I've come."
Kane's 30th goal of the season spared Spurs from defeat against their League Two opponents in front of a record 9,836 crowd at Rodney Parade.
The pitch -- also used for rugby -- was boggy and bobbly, while Spurs did part of their prematch warmup in a disused bar above the dressing rooms.
Kane has become a global superstar in the past three years but had loans at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester and Norwich before making his breakthrough at Spurs.
Speaking beside the Newport pitch, while local children yelled his name from the stands, Kane said the occasion was a reminder of what could have been.
"You get used to the attention," the 24-year-old said. "When you come to places like this, you expect it and for me it is a reminder of how far I've come and something I am proud of. I want to stay at the top level and play with the best players, so it's good to come here and remind yourself that this isn't so far away if you don't carry on working hard and get you head down
"When I was in League One with Orient, it was tough. It is tough to come back here and play on these pitches, and it was a good reminder of where a lot of us come from.
"In football there are very little differences, especially as a youngster coming through. I was playing here five or six years ago!
"I got an opportunity, thankfully, and managed to take it. If I didn't, then who knows where I would be now. I am happy with where I am, I worked very hard to get there, so I am going to make sure that I stay where I am.
"There is a lot of luck, you need luck in football. But I am a strong believer in positivity, hard work, believing in yourself, and you'll get what you deserve."
Spurs now have a Wembley replay against Newport amid a run of far more glamorous fixtures that could define their season.
They face Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in the next three league games before a two-legged tie against Juventus in the Champions League round of 16.
Kane said: "Obviously Juventus will be a great game and we are looking forward to that one. United in the week and Liverpool away are two very tough games.
"When you look at our season we need to fight for the top four in the Premier League, and in the Champions League obviously we are underdogs.
"So the FA Cup is one that we are looking at as one that we can progress in."
The replay at Wembley gives Kane another game in which to add to his goal tally, and he said reaching 50 for the season was not impossible.
"If the manager picks me as he has done the last couple of [FA Cup] games then I will be ready to play and try to score," he said. "I want to score and I want to win.
"Fifty goals? Who knows? It is possible. I am on 30 now and there is still a way to go. I have to keep doing what I am doing.
"I feel good, I feel confident -- let's see what happens and see how far we can get."
