SWANSEA, Wales -- Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham will prove how good they are if they qualify for the Champions League while playing at Wembley.
Spurs were unbeaten at White Hart Lane last season, dropping just four points, but they are spending this season at Wembley while their new £800 million home is being built.
They initially struggled at the national stadium, dropping nine points in the first seven league matches there, but they have won their last four home games -- scoring 15 and conceding just three -- ahead of West Ham's visit on Thursday.
Six wins from the last seven league games have put Spurs firmly in contention for a Champions League spot and they can move four points behind second-placed Manchester United with another victory against the Hammers.
Asked if something had clicked for Spurs at Wembley, centre-back Vertonghen said: "I haven't got this question in a while and it's a good sign!
"There was the first couple of games [this season], the Champions League [group stage last season] and whatever happened last year and at the beginning of [this season], and people started talking...
"But after that, I think we did very well there. We played a couple of good games. A couple of things changed after the [Borussia] Dortmund home game, where we did well, then [Real] Madrid, and obviously we beat Liverpool. If you start beating the big teams there then people find something else to talk about.
"Reaching the Champions League would be a big achievement for us. That shows how good we really are. I think everyone needs a home, and we will get one, but we're doing very well at the moment at Wembley.
"We're looking forward to [the new stadium] very much. Sometimes you see a couple of pictures on the internet but that's about it. I can't wait to get there."
Spurs squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to West Ham in their last meeting at Wembley in the EFL Cup fourth-round, which triggered a run of just one win in seven domestic matches.
Vertonghen says that defeat, plus the 2-1 reverse to Chelsea and frustrating home draws with Swansea, Burnley and West Brom, have been hard to stomach.
"I didn't play that one but definitely that was one of the lower ones [at Wembley]," the Belgium international added. "Obviously Chelsea at home too. We lost a couple of points against 'smaller' teams. It's tough to take after our great home run last year but we know we have to cope with it.
"We need to stay focused until the last minute, like against Swansea."
