Harry Winks: Real Madrid respect Tottenham ahead of UCL tie

LONDON -- Harry Winks believes Tottenham earned Real Madrid's respect at the Santiago Bernabeu and says their ongoing success in the Champions League gives them cause for confidence as they prepare to face the European champions again.

Having previously secured back-to-back wins over Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia in their opening two Group H matches, Mauricio Pochettino's side held Real to a 1-1 draw in Madrid earlier this month.

That tie left the two teams level at the top of the group with identical records, and they will meet once more at Wembley on Wednesday night.

"It's going to be a tough game, we know that," Winks said. "They're one of the best teams in the world so we're going to respect them -- and I guess they're going to respect us as well because we played well away at the Bernabeu.

"It's a game we're looking forward to, to try and bounce back [from Saturday's defeat against Manchester United] and get a good result.

"We got a good result against them a couple of weeks ago so hopefully we can get another one now and finish off the Champions League group in a strong way. We're doing well in the Champions League so we're confident going into the game."

The last time Spurs hosted the reigning European champions in the Champions League they beat Inter Milan 3-1 on a famous night at White Hart Lane in November 2010.

Winks -- a boyhood Tottenham supporter who came through the club's academy -- was 14 years old at the time.

"I watched it at home with my dad on the telly," he said. "It was a great night, a great game to watch as a Spurs fan, so fingers crossed we can get the same sort of result.

"It's something we're going to aim to do. We're going to go into the game expecting of ourselves that we can do it, and we're looking forward to it. It was a disappointing result on Saturday but we've got to put that behind us and get ourselves ready for Wednesday."

Winks will be hoping to play against Madrid, having also started and impressed against Liverpool and Manchester United in the last fortnight.

"Every opportunity I get I make sure I work hard to stay in the team," he said. "It's been a good few weeks for me, with good results. Unfortunately, Saturday [against United] wasn't the same, but every opportunity I get I go out there to work hard and do well."
