Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino both called Tottenham's 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley to open their Champions League Group E campaign on Wednesday night "massive."
Son Heung-Min got the hosts off to the perfect start with a brilliant individual effort to beat Roman Burki in the fourth minute, but Andriy Yarmolenko had Dortmund back on level terms seven minutes later.
Kane then took centre stage, scoring a 15th-minute goal that was a carbon copy of Son's effort to restore Spurs' lead and adding another on the hour mark to seal the points at a venue in which the London club have struggled in recent years.
"It was massive, massive to start in that way and win the three points today. I think it means more than three points," Pochettino said. "It's massive for our confidence. Massive because it will help us against everyone. We need time to improve, time to learn and be better. We are only early in the season, but I think we are happy.
"It's true that the game was so tough and they dominated it. It was tough in the first half, we were very clinical. We had to increase our level and then the game was under control. It was a tough game and it was an important win when you don't dominate the opponent, but you show different strengths in the team."
Pochettino continued: "It's Wembley, it's the perception that we should be changing for our future. To build that confidence and trust in Wembley is so important for our fans and of course for us.
"I hope to stop the talk about hoodoo and everything that we hear in the last year. I think it's fantastic for many things, the victory. Not only because three points helped us start well in the competition but I hope that it starts to stop all of the things that are around the team and the whole club.
"That we can win here is so important and I think that more than today talking about performance, which was good, it's more important the three points and the perception we can get for the future."
And Kane told BT Sport: "It's a massive win, nights like this at Wembley, we have to take advantage of it. Last season our downfall was the games at home. It was a more experienced performance from us tonight.
"In the Champions League you have to be smart. You can't always press teams on a big pitch, we took advantage on the counter-attack and exploited the space they left in behind."
Pochettino also hopes Kane's continued scoring in the Champions League -- he now has at least a goal in his last three matches in Europe -- will help him get the credit he deserves among the world's elite strikers.
"For me he's one of the best strikers in the world," Pochettino said. "There's no doubt for me. But if you score in this competition, the most important competition in the world, I think it will give him the credit that he deserves."
Spurs are likely to be without Jan Vertonghen for the trip to Cyprus next after he received a second yellow card for catching Mario Gotze with a flailing arm late on.
"I think we need to see it. I don't think it was the intention of Jan. He told us. But then I don't know. I think his performance was really good. It was a shame to receive the second yellow card," Pochettino said.
Serge Aurier and Fernando Llorente, a late substitute, both made their debuts at Wembley, while Davinson Sanchez made his second start at the heart of a three-man defence.
"I am so happy. Serge was fantastic today," Pochettino said. "He showed the quality we saw in him and that's why we signed him. I think it was his first game after only one week training with the team. He can improve and he can give his experience to the team.
"Llorente was fantastic too. He's still a little bit away from his best performance but he's doing well. I am so happy with everyone, the new signings and the whole squad. We still need to improve a lot but we are in a good way. The last two victories will help us to improve."
