Ben Davies: No Tottenham end-of-season collapse after West Ham loss

LONDON -- Tottenham are determined to avoid another late season collapse, according to Ben Davies, who has admitted that Friday's 1-0 defeat at West Ham has ended their Premier League title hopes.

Chelsea will be confirmed as champions before Tottenham play next if they beat Middlesbrough on Monday and West Bromwich Albion on Friday.

Last season, Spurs' infamous 2-2 draw at Chelsea confirmed Leicester as champions and triggered a collapse as they lost their last two matches of the season, culminating in an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at already relegated Newcastle to slip behind Arsenal into third position.

Tottenham have already confirmed a first finish above rivals Arsenal since 1995 and their highest ever Premier League points total, which is currently 77.

However, Manchester City can still beat them to second place and Davies is wary of history repeating itself after losing to West Ham.

"Of course we realise what this result [against West Ham] means for our season. But we've given our all and now it's about just finishing it off well," the left-back told reporters.

"There's similarities with the Chelsea game last season but we've really given it a good go this year. I think we've definitely matured as a team. The season slipped off towards the end of last year. We're determined not to let that happen again."

Tottenham's next match sees them face Manchester United in the last ever game at White Hart Lane, their home since 1899, on Sunday.

If they avoid defeat, they will end the season unbeaten at home, while they need two more points from United's visit and the trips to Leicester and Hull to seal their highest ever Premier League finish of second.

"Of course, it's a massive occasion and as players we're proud of the record we've got there this year and we want to finish it off well. We've got to just get our heads around what's happened [against West Ham], take a couple of days," Davies said. "But then it's a full week of training and getting ready for the next one. It will be a massive game anyway but playing against good opposition, it will be nice if we can pick up a win."

Danny Rose is expected to return to full training this week after over three months sidelined with a knee injury and the England international could be in contention to replace Davies for the final three games.

Asked if he felt he had proved a point in Rose's absence, the Wales international said: "Yeah, I possibly have. It's been nice to have a run of games and I feel I've performed quite well. When I get that chance to get on the field, that's what I've got to do."
