Tottenham granted an extra 98 seats in new stadium at White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur's application to increase the capacity of their new stadium has been passed by Haringey Council.

The proposed capacity for £800 million stadium, under construction adjacent to White Hart Lane, was originally 61,461, but in mid-April improvements in the design allowed Spurs to apply for 61,559, which has been approved by the council.

The club said the single-tier Kop stand on the south side of the stadium -- which will be the biggest of its kind in the UK -- will have 500 additional seats, increasing its capacity to 17,500. Reconfiguration of the seating will lead to a net rise of 98 seats.

The stadium is due to be ready for the start of the 2018-19 campaign and will be the biggest club stadium in London, holding over 1,000 more supporters than Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

It remains someway short of 90,000-seater Wembley, however, where Spurs will play all home matches next season while White Hart Lane is demolished and the remainder of the new stadium is built in its place.

Last month, Haringey Council signed off an agreement to contribute £7.5m in heritage and public realm funding towards the cost of the project, which is also being paid for by advanced ticket sales, the NFL and a naming rights deal.
