Moussa Sissoko in favour of Europa League games at White Hart Lane

Moussa Sissoko has said it would be better for Tottenham Hotspur to play home games at White Hart Lane rather than Wembley if they drop into the Europa League but the club is yet to make a decision on a venue.

Tuesday's 2-1 loss at Monaco eliminated Spurs from the Champions League but they will be guaranteed a place in the Europa League round-of-32 if they avoid a third home defeat of the campaign when they face CSKA Moscow at Wembley next month.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said the players are to blame for the club's struggles at home in the competition but, speaking in Monaco, Sissoko said: "I think it would be good for us to play at home in the Europa League, and by home, I mean White Hart Lane.

"Going home would make it easier for us. We know the stadium and it would be better for us."

Tottenham's carefully-worded announcement of their deal with the Football Association (FA) stated that the club would play "Champions League fixtures for the 2016-17 season" at the 90,000-capacity national stadium, making no mention of "European" or 'Europa League' matches.

White Hart Lane does not meet UEFA requirements to play Champions League football this season but the governing body has different regulations for the Europa League and it is possible the club could return to White Hart Lane.

A UEFA spokesperson told the Guardian: "Upon a specific request by a club, UEFA would look into it."

However, a club source told ESPN FC that Spurs will not have any discussions until after the match against CSKA and while some of the players, including Sissoko, would prefer to return to White Hart Lane, the source said Pochettino may favour staying at Wembley.

A source close to the Football Association told ESPN FC that a return to White Hart Lane was more likely, however.

Spurs are scheduled to play all their homes matches, domestic and European, at Wembley next season while White Hart Lane is being redeveloped and the manager may be keen to have more playing time at the venue in order to help the players past their unease.
