Tottenham's Champions League woes not Wembley's fault - Ben Davies

LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies joined his manager Mauricio Pochettino in refusing to blame Wembley for the dismal 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Kevin Kampl's goal left Spurs with two defeats from two at the national stadium, and winless in six matches going into Sunday's North London derby at Arsenal.

Spurs were again missing Harry Kane, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela but they were unrecognisable from the team that beat Manchester City at the beginning of last month.

Davies, who also started the 2-1 defeat to AS Monaco in September, echoed Pochettino in insisting the unfamiliar surroundings were not to blame for the display.

"It's not for us to blame where we play," the Wales international told reporters after the game. "We're professional footballers, we play anywhere in the world at any stadium. At the end of the day it's 11 versus 11 and our performance tonight didn't merit us getting three points and it's disappointing.

"It was a tough night, we didn't perform like we can and it's hard to pinpoint anything specifically that went wrong. That's for the next couple of days where we have to just look at what happened and focus on getting things right."

Davies admitted that Spurs will probably have to beat CSKA Moscow at Wembley and win in Monaco to progress to the knockouts, before turning his attentions to the derby.

"Yeah we all know it's a huge game and form kind of goes out the window in these games. It's one that both teams are going to be looking to win, hopefully it can be us," he added.

Victor Wanyama also dismissed suggestions that playing at Wembley was a problem for Spurs, adding: "I don't think it is anything to do with the pitch or with the stadium. I think everything was good.

"Today we just didn't show enough quality to win the game. We were in control but we didn't create enough. Everyone was disappointed at the end of the game and we want to improve for the next game.

"It's really tough for us [to qualify] now. We'll take it game by game and see how we finish. It's disappointing and now we have to bounce back and show that we can get back again, get back to our level. Come Sunday hopefully we can do the job."
