AZ Alkmaar chief backs Vincent Janssen to succeed with Tottenham

Vincent Janssen joined Spurs from AZ Alkmaar for £17 million this summer.

AZ Alkmaar's director of football believes Vincent Janssen's summer transfer to Tottenham was a good deal for all parties and has backed the striker to be a success in English football.

Janssen joined Spurs for £17 million in July after finishing as top scorer with 27 goals in 34 appearances in his only season in the Eredivisie.

The Netherlands international, 22, has impressed in patches for Spurs but he is yet to score from open play, with his only goal coming from the penalty spot in the 5-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup.

Spurs had a number of bids for Janssen rejected by Alkmaar, and the Dutch club's director of football Max Huiberts told AZ Spreekt: "Afterwards I thought: 'wow, nice, we have done well.' I was relieved that it was completed well.

"The buyers, Vincent Janssen, and we were very satisfied. But I also understand the fans who think we have lost a very good player. That just happens, we have to deal with that in the Dutch league."

Janssen has started just three games for his new club but he was expected to be given an extended run in Mauricio Pochettino's team after Harry Kane damaged his ankle ligaments in the 1-0 win over Sunderland on Sept. 18.

However, Pochettino used on Heung-Min Son as an auxiliary striker in the 2-0 win against Manchester City before the international break and Janssen faces a battle to win back his place from the in-form South Korean.

"It was said that it was ridiculous that we asked more than 10 million for Vincent because he plays for AZ," added Huiberts.

"But then I think why? He is the top scorer in the Netherlands and the No. 1 striker of Oranje. I am sure that he will adapt quickly to the level of the Premier League."

Janssen scored a brilliant solo goal for the Netherlands against Belarus during the international break and he could be in-line for a recall in Saturday's trip to West Brom.
