Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham close to another contract extension

LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has "promised" another player will sign a new contract in the coming days after Kyle Walker became the seventh Spurs star to sign a long-term deal within a fortnight.

Sources have previously told ESPN FC that Jan Vertonghen is close to agreeing a new deal, while talks are ongoing with Erik Lamela.

The club announced a five-year deal until 2021 for Walker on Friday, following similar contracts for Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Tom Carroll, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Danny Rose.

"I promise you in the next few days will appear another one," Pochettino told a news conference. "And I'll appear the same way ... I was in tracksuit with Walker. The media talk too much about my suit, my position!

"Always it's important for the club. It's very important for the players, too. They show a big commitment with the club. It's important for the future. I'm happy all players show commitment with us."

Spurs are making a concerted effort to tie down their senior players, while Pochettino handed debuts to three teenagers in Wednesday's 5-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup.

Asked if the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Marcus Edwards and Anton Walkes could have a further impact of the first team this season, Pochettino said: "With time, yes. They're very young. Every time they have the possibility to play, it's a good chance to show their quality.

"Always, we need to give time, we need to be careful in the way we give them an option to develop. That's a very important thing -- to care and to try to help them. The quality that they showed Wednesday, or they showed in preseason -- it's sure we have very talented players for the future of the club.

"It's true that football is a different business. It's important we handle our players who come through the academy, and our first team, our squad. It's our plan to sign players -- that is a very hard job -- but we're in a good way."
