Harry Kane stretchered off with injured ankle in Spurs' defeat of Sunderland

LONDON -- Harry Kane scored the winner but was stretchered off with an ankle injury as Tottenham beat 10-man Sunderland 1-0 on Sunday.

Kane finished from close range just before the hour for his second goal in as many league matches, but the 22-year-old was removed from the game three minutes from time after suffering the injury.

The England international striker left the stadium on crutches, wearing a protective boot.

"Kane to be assessed tomorrow. He twisted his ankle and felt pain. It's difficult to assess and give an opinion. Only we have to wait, to see tomorrow," Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said after the match.

"I'm sure there may be a problem with his ligaments but it's difficult to assess today. We need to wait."

The news is a worry for Pochettino, however, as his side face a crucial run of matches domestically and in Europe.

Kane was always unlikely to start Wednesday's EFL Cup match against Gillingham but Spurs travel to Middlesbrough in the Premier League next weekend, before a vital Champions League game in Russia against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday of week.

Eric Dier, meanwhile, was replaced by Ben Davies after appearing to tweak his hamstring and Mousa Dembele, making his first start for Spurs since May after a six-match suspension, was helped off by the club doctor on 73 minutes, also with a hamstring problem. The Belgian appeared to tell Pochettino he was fine, however.

"Dier and Dembele only felt cramps in the hamstring -- nothing big," Pochettino added.
