Mauricio Pochettino promises another Tottenham deal after Eric Dier news

LONDON -- Mauricio Pochettino has "promised" that another Tottenham Hotspur player will sign a new contract in the coming days after Eric Dier agreed a five-year deal on Tuesday.

"I can only promise in the next few days that another player will have the same news that happened with Eric Dier," the Spurs manager told a news conference.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Kyle Walker is close to agreeing a new long-term deal with the club, while Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose are in advanced talks, and Harry Kane and Erik Lamela continue to negotiate with the club.

Dier's deal comes almost exactly a year after he agreed a five-year contract in Sept. 2015, as Spurs continue a policy of rewarding their star players with regular pay rises and extensions.

"It's always important to keep your best players and that your English talent stays and commits for a long time. It's fantastic news," Pochettino said of the 22-year-old's news.

"It's very important for the club. I, we, showed our commitment with the club when we signed a new five-year deal [in May] and it's important for the future that the players to show the same.

"He [Dier] arrived at the same time as me and when he came, he was very young, with no experience in Premier League. I used him as a fullback and a centre-back and last season as a midfield. I remember a year and a half ago there was a big mess on whether he is fullback or centre-back, and in the end he finished as a midfielder!

"With young players, we need to give them the option to play. We're happy with how they've improved. He's a nice person, a top man, and a very good player. He needs to keep improving and we'll see what happens with him."

Kane is expected to join his England teammate Dier in committing to Tottenham in the coming weeks, and in doing so the forward will become the first member of the current squad to be paid over £100,000-a-week.

Pochettino believes the England international is among the best strikers in the world and hopes Kane rises to the challenge of playing in the Champions League ahead of Spurs' return to the competition on Wednesday.

"He's one of the best in the world, not only in Europe. To play in Champions League will be a very big challenge for him to prove he can compete and show his quality," Pochettino said before the group match against AS Monaco at Wembley.

"He's still very young. Last season was his second complete season in Premier League and he was top scorer. We can expect more -- or maybe not! -- cause he showed he's top. Only [we need] patience when he doesn't score because he's top player, top quality, top man."

Dier, meanwhile, said: "The manager has been great for me since I've been here, and all the young players coming through. The players here, I think I've got a great relationship with all the players here. We're a good group and ambitious, looking forward. With the training ground and the new stadium on the way it's a fantastic time for the club.

"There's a fantastic atmosphere in the dressing room, everyone gets along, and there's a determined attitude to improve and take the club forward. That's our attitude, we're focussed on doing that and doing our best to push the club forward."
