Tottenham's Vincent Janssen hopes to emulate Ruud van Nistelrooy success

Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen has said it would be "an enormous honour" to emulate Ruud van Nistelrooy but knows comparisons with the former Manchester United striker are premature.

Janssen, 22, was last season's top scorer in the Eredivisie with 27 goals in 34 games, persuading Spurs to spend £17 million to sign him from AZ Alkmaar in the summer.

The Netherlands international was born in Heesch, near from Van Nistelrooy's home town of Oss and told Dutch daily AD: "In England they are just finding out that me and Van Nistelrooy are from the same area.

"But I wouldn't say we're being mentioned in the same breath -- maybe that will come. I would think that's an enormous honour. I'm not as far as him yet."

Van Nistelrooy scored 95 goals in 150 league appearances for United after joining from PSV in 2001.

But although Janssen has yet to score in the English top flight he has made an impressive start, featuring in Spurs' first three games.

"I've always felt a strong urge to prove myself. Maybe that's my biggest talent," he said. "I can tell the crowd appreciates the way I play.

"Within the squad I was immediately accepted. We have a young, ambitious group, with no players who feel they've already arrived. That made it easier, I think. I really was accommodated fantastically."

Janssen has established himself as a regular for the Netherlands team under Danny Blind and, following a friendly defeat to Greece last week, former Dutch international Willem van Hanegem described him as "by far the best player" in the squad.
