Tottenham can compete for Premier League with big spenders - Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris told the Daily Telegraph there is "no reason" why the club should not win a trophy this season, despite the huge spending of rivals such as Manchester United and Manchester City.

Spurs challenged for the Premier League title last term only to collapse in their final four matches and finish third behind champions Leicester City and neighbours Arsenal.

High-profile managerial and player arrivals at United, City and Chelsea suggest the race for the Premier League will be far tougher this season.

However, goalkeeper Lloris stressed that success was about more than just star names.

"I feel the improvement since my arrival [in 2012]. I believe in the club, I believe in the manager, I believe in my teammates. We like the philosophy," the France international said.

"Today in the Premier League it is very difficult to win trophies, but it is not a reason to stop believing. I am still hungry for that and I will try my best as usual.

"It's a good thing to recognise how difficult it is to win trophies. It is not only about talent, it's more than that. In football, it is not only about names."

Spurs return to the Champions League this season after reaching the quarterfinals in 2010-11, their only other foray in the competition.

No English club has reached the final since Chelsea won in 2012, and Lloris said: "The quality of the Premier League at the moment is why it is difficult to compete in European competitions as well.

"You expend so much energy in the Premier League because the level is so high. This season will be very exciting because great managers are in charge of great clubs. Great players are coming."
