Tottenham will not sell players to fund new stadium construction - Daniel Levy

Tottenham will not sell players to fund their new stadium, chairman Daniel Levy has said.

Work has begun on Spurs' £400 million new home, adjacent to White Hart Lane, with the new 61,000-capacity stadium due to be ready for the start of the 2018-19 season.

Next season will be the club's last at their old ground, meaning they will need a temporary home for the 2017-18 season.

A source has told ESPN FC that they are close to agreeing a deal with the Football Association to play next season's Champions League home matches at Wembley and use it as a temporary home for at least one season.

Spurs said an announcement on both decisions was due "imminently" and that "contingencies" would be built into a deal in case work on the new stadium overran.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has warned that Spurs cannot make expensive mistakes in the transfer market during construction of their new ground, while Levy has said the club is braced for "battles on and off the pitch" in near future.

In a meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust (THST), he stressed that the squad would be strengthened in the summer and revealed they had already secured £150 million of funding.

"Daniel Levy assured that no player will be sold to fund the stadium...[and] said the intention is to strengthen the squad and to do so as early as possible; it is, though, not always possible to complete deals well ahead of the transfer deadline," the minutes of Tuesday's meeting said.

"It is likely to be a tougher transfer window than ever given the extra finance available to all clubs, due to the new TV deal. It was felt Euro 2016 had an impact on timings, but Levy stressed this was the same for all clubs."

Levy also confirmed that Pochettino would have the final say on all transfers.

The Argentine, who signed a new five-year contract earlier this month, is part of a five-man transfer committee along with Levy, head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, chief scout Ian Broomfield and former manager David Pleat.
