Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld: Premier League win now 'very difficult'

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld admits winning the title will be "very difficult" after Leicester's latest victory and says Spurs are now focused on finishing in the top three.

Leicester remain seven points clear of second-placed Spurs in the most unexpected Premier League title race in history, after the Foxes beat Sunderland 2-0 on Sunday shortly before Spurs' 3-0 win over Manchester United at White Hart Lane.

With five matches remaining, time is running out for Spurs to catch the runaway leaders, who can seal their first top-flight title in history with three more wins.

Alderweireld admits Spurs' are looking down the table as well as up and says finishing in the top three -- and securing automatic qualification for the Champions League group stage -- is a priority.

Asked if he thought the season would be a failure if Spurs don't win the title, the Belgian told Dutch daily De Telegraaf: "No, I don't. But if you're so close, you naturally want more. Being the champions would be great.

"We are now working very hard to finish in the top three. We have a direct Champions League ticket in our hands and want to hold it. The Champions League will make our young squad much stronger."

Alderweireld, who scored his fourth goal of the season on Sunday, added: "Winning the title seems very difficult. Leicester has everything in their hands.

"We want to win the last five games to increase the pressure on Leicester and keep our pursuers behind us."

However, Erik Lamela insists Spurs still believe they can win a maiden Premier League crown and first league title since 1961, despite the points gap between them and the Foxes.

"We still believe. We knew before the United game that Leicester had won but we still played a great game. Our task is to win all the remaining games," the winger, who also scored against United, told the Evening Standard.

"Whether Leicester win or lose, the important thing is that we are concentrated on the job in hand.

"We have to finish the season in the best manner possible. There are five games left and our aim is five victories."

Meanwhile, Alderweireld also said he would be open to a return to Ajax, where he won back-to-back Eredivisie titles, in the future.

"Ajax is a fantastic club and I would love to come back one day, but I won't make any promises," he added.

"I spent most of my career at Ajax and am thankful for those years. I was extremely happy in Amsterdam."
