Tottenham boosted as South Korea free Son Heung-Min for title bid

Tottenham attacker Son Heung-Min has been left out of the South Korea squad for this month's internationals in the hope that Spurs will allow him to represent his country at the Olympics.

South Korea head coach Uli Stielike has agreed not to select Son for a World Cup qualifier against Lebanon on March 24 or the friendly against Thailand three days later in order to boost the London club's Premier League title bid.

Stielike hopes that Spurs will agree allow Son to represent South Korea as a wild card at the Olympics in return.

"We've asked Tottenham to make Son available for the Olympics as a wild card, and in exchange, we offered not to select him for matches in March," he told a news conference in Seoul on Monday.

"Tottenham are in a battle for the Premier League title. Since our association is being considerate of the club, we hope they will give us a positive response."

Son, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, has made 32 appearances for the club and scored five times.

Olympic squads are restricted to players aged under 23 and three overaged wild card players.

South Korea will need Tottenham's permission to pick Son, who turns 24 in July, as a wild card because the Olympic tournament is not part of FIFA's international match calendar.
