Tottenham striker Harry Kane ready to up his game next season

Tottenham striker Harry Kane insists he needs to continue improving as a player with Premier League defenders now paying him more attention than ever.

Kane, 21, was an unknown quantity at the beginning of the season, having struggled for first-team football at Spurs after a series of loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester.

A breakthrough campaign, however, has seen him score 30 goals in all competitions for the club this term, while making his England debut and winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the process.

"Defenders are getting a bit tighter on me now," Kane told FourFourTwo. "And maybe there's a defensive midfielder screening in front of me too.

"You could see there was quite a big difference in Chelsea's game plan between our league game at White Hart Lane [which Spurs won 5-3] and the Capital One Cup Final [which Chelsea won 2-0].

"Did they do that specifically with me in mind? Maybe."

Despite the success Kane has enjoyed on the pitch this season, he is still striving to develop his game.

"I still don't think of myself as a top player," he said. "There's still room for me to improve and my mindset is to keep trying to do that. There's always more goals you can score and more wins the team can get.

"The moment you think you've reached the top, somebody else will come along and overtake you. I always want to try to be better. The main thing I want to work on now is the physical element -- I want to get as fit and as fast and powerful as I can."

Kane added: "I can't stop ever stop trying to improve. I've had a great season but there are always bigger and better things out there. We want to push for the Champions League and we want to win a trophy. It has been a great year for me but you've got to look to go one step further."
