Emmanuel Adebayor says Tottenham must be more ruthless

Emmanuel Adebayor has warned his Tottenham teammates they must find a cutting edge in front of goal if they are to challenge for a Champions League place this season.

Tottenham slipped to a 2-2 draw against Sunderland on Saturday despite dominating for large periods of the match and Adebayor claimed they must begin to capitalise on such performances.

"It was worrying not to win," Adebayor said. "If it happens a lot it is a worry.

"We've got to finish teams off when we've got them on the ropes. We didn't do that today. We're very disappointed because we should have won the game.

"It felt like a good performance, we were in such control, but we will head back, watch it again and see where we went wrong because when you have so much of a game and don't win, it means something has gone wrong."

Adebayor, who has scored once in four Premier League outings this season, bemoaned Tottenham's inability to hold on to a lead as Sunderland twice came from behind to snatch a point.

However, the striker believes Tottenham can still take positives out of the draw, particularly after suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool before the international break.

"Twice we gave ourselves a platform and couldn't build on it," Adebayor added. "Even after they equalised the first time, we had many chances to put the game out of sight. But we couldn't do it.

"If there was a positive, it was that we started both halves very well. The manager stressed that after Liverpool and we couldn't have made better starts to both halves."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was also left frustrated by the performance, admitting his side must improve to ensure they do not suffer a repeat of last season's sixth-placed finish.

"We need to be more aggressive and more focused," Pochettino said. "It's difficult to accept. You need to have luck and it's true Sunderland had luck. I think there's a gap in the stats but you need to kill the game."
