Toronto FC signs Poland defender Damien Perquis

Toronto FC continued its active offseason on Monday by signing Poland center-back Damien Perquis.

Perquis, 30, had played for Real Betis in Spain before reportedly terminating his contract this month ahead of his move to MLS.

Toronto has already spent a lot of money this month on attackers, adding U.S. striker Jozy Altidore and Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco, and the club has now moved to shore up a backline that plagued it last season.

Only four MLS clubs allowed more goals last season than Toronto FC, and Perquis should slot in next to Steven Caldwell in the center of Toronto's defense.

"Damien's signing addresses an area we wanted to improve upon this offseason. His experience and leadership both at club and international level will be a welcomed addition to our team," Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "Damien has a great defensive sense and will provide an upside on the ball with his strong distribution from the back. We are very excited to bring him to Toronto FC."

Perquis, who has previously played for French clubs Troyes, Saint-Etienne and Sochaux, has 13 caps for Poland and played for the national team throughout Euro 2012.

Also on Monday, Toronto added defender Eriq Zavaleta from the Seattle Sounders in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.

Zavaleta, 22, played last season on loan with Chivas USA, making 15 starts.
