Suzuki Cup champs Thailand beat Belarus on pens, retain King's Cup

Southeast Asian champions Thailand retained the King's Cup after defeating Belarus in Sunday's final in Bangkok.

The Thais, who won their second consecutive AFF Suzuki Cup last December, prevailed 5-4 on penalties after the game finished 0-0.

The triumph came after Milovan Rajevac's side had defeated North Korea 3-0 in Friday's semifinal.

The Serbian took over from Kiatisuk Senamuang in May and has secured some impressive results, despite the absence of several key players.

They held United Arab Emriates to a 1-1 draw in their last 2018 AFC World Cup qualifier on June 13, having taken a second-half lead in Bangkok.

In the penalty shoot out on Sunday night, it was Siroch Chatthong's decisive spot kick that gave the War Elephants victory.

Midfielder Theerathon Bunmathan was named man of the match after a commanding performance. But goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan was the hero in the shoot out by saving twice.

Burkina Faso secured third place on Sunday when they defeated North Korea 4-3 in a penalty shoot out after it was 3-3 over 90 minutes.

Under King's Cup rules, no extra time is played if the scores are level after 90 minutes
