Late goal lifts Buriram United over defending champs Chiangrai United

Renato Kelic's lone goal was enough for Buriram to top the Beetles. Buriram United

Buriram United edged defending champions Chiangrai United 1-0 in a tightly-contested affair while BG Pathum United remain top of the table with a 2-1 win over Rayong FC this week.

Former champions Buriram, looking for their second win since their return after the COVID-19 delay, had to wait until the 86th minute at Singha Stadium to seal the win on Renato Kelic's header from a Gidi Kanyuk corner.

The Beetles had plenty of chances to take the lead as Ekanit Panya and Akarawin Sawasdee both failed to hit the target from close range. Buriram's biggest chance of the first half was a looping header from Suphanat Mueanta which was tipped over by Saranon Anuin.

Serbian attacker Marko Scepovic had the ball in the net for Buriram immediately after the restart, but the goal was ruled out for an offside call on Supachok Sarachat. The lanky Scepovic went close again with a header six minutes later only to be denied by Anuin's fingertips. At the other end, Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen also pulled off an acrobatic save to deny Ekanit in the 80th minute.

Pathum United also left it late to overcome promoted Rayong 2-1 at the Leo Stadium as Victor Cardozo converted his second penalty in the 89th minute. Bottom-placed Rayong had taken a surprise lead through a deflected effort from Danilo, but Cardozo equalised with a penalty shot before the break -- awarded for a foul on Irfan Fandi.

The Rabbits, who had Sumanya Purisai's goal ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up, were made to wait until the final minutes for the winner when Siroch Chatthong was fouled inside the box. Brazilian defender Cardozo found his second goal of the night from 12 yards out.

Pathum United lead the pack with 19 points after seven matches while Bangkok United FC are now four points behind in second after a 1-0 loss to Chonburi FC on Sunday. Chonburi are level on points with Bangkok but have played an extra match while Chiangrai follow suit with 14 points from eight outings.

Meanwhile, power issues affected Port FC and PAT Stadium again as their league fixture against Muangthong United was postponed due to a blackout. Port later said in a statement that the match was called off due to safety concerns after a generator explosion at their home ground.

The Port Lions were forced to forfeit their fixture against Police Tero on September 13 due to loss of electricity during the game.

In other matches of the week, Suphanburi FC suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Trat FC while Ratchaburi Mitr Phol FC and PT Prachuap FC played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Mitr Phol Stadium. Sukhothai FC and Police Tero FC settled for a 1-1 draw while the match between Samut Prakan City FC and Nakhon Ratchasima FC also ended in 2-2 stalemate.
